This FAQ was created from a live-audience Q&A with Bert Scalzo following the webcast “ Pinpoint and Optimize Inefficient SQL with Toad™ for Oracle®. ” Q: Which product do you recommend for me to analyze my application when it runs against SQL and/or Oracle databases? A: We recommend SQL Optimizer for Oracle. The analysis you describe is one of its main features. Q: What’s in the Toad for Oracle Freeware version? A: Toad for Oracle Freeware s a limited version of the full, commercial product. It times out after one year, but you may download another copy at that time. Note that Toad for Oracle Freeware is limited to five users per company. Q: How much do the Developer and Xpert versions of Toad for Oracle cost? A: Please contact Sales directly through https://www.quest.com/buy/ Q: I have the Xpert Edition of Toad for Oracle. I cannot see the refactoring option when I select a query in Editor. I see refactor but I don’t have many options under it. A: The refactoring was added with a few choices in 11.6. More choices have been added since 12.1. Q: I have the 12.5 Professional edition, but my only options are OEM and advanced SQL optimization. How do I get Auto Optimize? A: You must have Toad Xpert Edition (or higher) to get both Auto Optimize and SQL Optimizer. Q: Will Toad also suggest indexes? A: In the Toad Xpert Edition, if you use the full-blown SQL Optimizer – not Auto Optimize – then Toad will suggest indexes. There are utilities to examine the database table and index design and to make purely structural advice and/or recommendations, such as partitioning the table or using a different type of index. There is also a utility to watch all the SQL hitting objects and offer workload-based advice and/or recommendations. Q: Auto Optimize looks very much like the full SQL Optimizer. A: The full SQL Optimizer offers dozens of features that the Auto Optimize does not. For example, there are utilities to examine the database table and index design and to make purely structural advice and/or recommendations, like partitioning the table or using a different type of index. There is also a utility to watch all the SQL hitting objects and offer workload-based advice and/or recommendations. Q: Is the query tuner/optimizer available inside the DB Admin add-on, or is it a different add-on? A: The DB Admin Module adds some DBA-type functionality. Toad DBA Suite for Oracle includes everything we offer DBAs in one package. If all you need is SQL tuning and optimization, you could purchase Toad for Oracle Xpert Edition, then add the DB Admin Module. Q: Does Toad have anything on SPM management? A: No, SPM is not currently on our roadmap. You can always visit Toad World, go to the Toad for Oracle section and post your idea on our Toad Idea Pond . Ideas that receive the most votes in the Idea Pond are most likely to be implemented. Q: Can we use Toad to get the Oracle trace files in a RAC database too? Can it fetch them from another instance? A: Yes. Toad for Oracle offers bundles that support both RAC and Exadata. However, some features require that specific version (for example, Toad DBA Suite for RAC) for all RAC-centric functionality. Q: Is Auto Optimize available in the Base Edition or Professional Edition? A: No. Auto Optimize requires Toad Xpert Edition or above Q: Don't some of these analysis features require the Oracle Tuning Package? A: No. We have our own proprietary technology, which does not rely on Oracle's add-on packs. Please read “ Toad and Oracle Licensing – What’s the Story? (Q&A) ” for more information. Note that if you have OEM Diagnostics and Tuning Packs (or any OEM add-on pack, for that matter), Toad offers interfaces and screens you can use if you prefer. Many shops allow only DBAs to use OEM materials, and they need these interfaces and screens in Toad for their developers. Q: How do I tell if I have the 64/32bit version of Toad for Oracle Xpert? A: Look at the installation directory. On a 64-bit system, all 64-bit applications will be installed under "Program Files" by default. If you install a 32-bit edition of Toad on a 64-bit machine, it will be installed under "Program Files (x86)" instead. Q: Is there a big difference between 32-bit and 64-bit? A: No. The 64-bit version simply allows your program to use more memory. There is no real advantage to 64-bit unless you want to fetch a one-billion-row table all into memory on your PC within a Toad data grid. Keep in mind that your version of Toad should match your version of Oracle client (32-bit/64-bit). See “ 64-Bit Toad – Fact vs. Fiction ” for more information.
