I'm not sure which version of Toad you're running but it sounds like your data grid somehow got pinned above your main editor tabs. Easy fix is to R-click on your Editor toolbar and select "restore defaults". If you have highly customized menus/buttons, then you would want to click on the section header where you see the "Data Grid" label and drag it back down to the bottom.
